My 6 Steps for Starting a Fitness and Weight-loss Journey

Of course I am no fitness expert, personal trainer or anything like that. But the power of networking and information sharing is working wonders in my personal transformation. I know that sometimes even the IDEA of changing your lifestyle to lose weight or get in shape is overwhelming. But you will never get the change you want if you don’t start….So here are the steps I took to start you off and get you on your way:

1. Learn what your calorie maintenance level is. Even if you have no plans to count calories, you should know about how many calories it takes to maintain your current weight. It will give you an idea of how much you have to change your eating to start losing weight. The fact is a calorie deficit is what causes weight loss. You can learn more about this and calculate your BMR here: https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/2011/12/27/to-count-calories-or-to-not-count-calories/

2. Write down the reasons you are deciding to make this change. I know it doesn’t seem necessary, but it is. You have to constantly think of ways to stay motivated when you are doing something this difficult. You are changing a habit you have had almost your entire life. So write it down and put it somewhere you can see it. Get more info here:https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/2012/02/06/on-losing-motivation-how-do-we-break-the-cycle/ You can even take it one step further and create a vision board. They are very successful in keeping people motivated in weight-loss plans:https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/2012/05/01/new-vision-board/

3. Come up with a healthy eating and exercise plan! And don’t even think about starting some type of temporary diet. Been there, done that. They don’t work for permanent weight loss. Decide on realistic goals that fit YOUR life style. don’t focus on what others may be doing. For ideas check out some of our plans and goals here:https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/our-plans-and-goals/

4. Think about the things that may get in your way of you being able to stick to your plan and have a counter attack. Who is going to babysit? When will you find the time? We came up with some solutions to possible barriers in our eating plan here: https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/2011/12/13/problems-with-eating-healthy/ And barriers in our exercise routine here: https://operationflatbelly.wordpress.com/2011/12/14/our-top-10-barriers-to-working-out/ They might give you some ideas.

5.Don’t procrastinate! Stop making excuses and START! Then figure out how you will  track your progress. The only way to learn what you are doing wrong and what you may be doing right is to have a way of tracking and/or recording your progress. I keep an online journal through www.myfitnesspal.com. However, I have also utilized journals I’ve bought from Borders and plain notebooks.

6. Develop a support system to keep you going. It’s hard to take this journey alone. If you could find a workout buddy that will increase your chances of success. Connect with people at the gym Or connect with others online. operationflatbelly has a support network on facebook www.facebook.com/OperationFlatBelly and twitter www.twitter.com/OperationFB . There are others as well such as the 100 million pound challenge.

There you have it. Get started on your transformation today!!
