Our Top 10 Barriers to Working Out Regularly

Here are some of the ways we plan to solve our workout problems. NO MORE EXCUSES!!!! Get moving.

Barrier #1 Money and Attire

Problem: Gym memberships cost money. Workout clothing and shoes cost money. Workout videos and equipment cost money. Sometimes we feel that we can’t afford to work out on a regular basis.

Possible Solutions:

  • Utilize the internet and magazines you have access to, to learn workouts to do at home.
  • If you have cable with On Demand, there are also free workouts available for you to do in your home.
  • Do workouts that don’t cost money: walking, climbing  the stairs, jumping rope, jogging, biking, dancing.
  • Use heavy objects around the house for weight and resistance.

Barrier #2 Scheduling Conflicts and Lack of time

Problem: Sometimes we feel like we are too busy or don’t have the time to work out regularly.

Possible Solution:

  • We are going to plan when we will work out at the beginning of each week according to what else we have planned. Its important to prioritize your workout time. Don’t just wait until you have free time or it will get neglected.
  • Get up earlier.Workout first thing in the morning. Get it out of the way.
  • Squeeze in short bursts of exercise throughout the day. Such as 10 minutes of walking or 10 minutes of dancing, or squatting and push ups. You want the weight off?? FIND THE TIME.

Barrier #3 Motivation and Support

Problem: It’s hard to stay motivated to work out on your own. And sometimes it feels like everyone around you aren’t really concerned with eating right and exercising.

Possible Solution:

  • Find a workout buddy with similar goals and who will hold you accountable!
  • Pay someone for support and motivation. Get a trainer.
  • Join Fitness Classes
  • Utilize social media: Follow and post in our blog! Use facebook, Join myfitnesspal.com, Join the 50 million Pound Challenge
  • Write down your goals and record your successes. Exercise journals keep you motivated.

Barrier #4 Hair

Problem: A lot of African American women do not work out because they don’t know how to manage their hair and a workout routine.

Possible Solution:

  • We have opted for braids. This is an option
  • Some people go for the clip-on ponytail look
  • Wigs????

Barrier #5 Embarrassment

Problem: Some find it embarrassing to go to a gym to workout.

Possible Solution: 

  • Buy workout videos or utilize On-Demand Cable to exercise at home alone.
  • Utilize headphones to “zone out” and ignore everyone else there. Remember: Everyone is there for a reason.

Barrier #6 Boredom

Problem: It’s very easy to get bored with going to the gym and getting on the same machines. It’s also easy to get bored with the same workout video.

Possible Solution:

  • Vary your routine. Try different type of workouts each week. Keep switching it up. This is important to maintain weight loss anyway.
  • Do something fun or find a workout that you enjoy such as swimming,dancing, skating, biking…etc.
  • Workout with friends or family so that you can be social while exercising.

Barrier #7 Lack of Education and Know How

Problem: Sometimes we just don’t know what to do or how to get started.

Possible Solution:

Barrier #8 Physical Health problems

Problem: Some people feel limited to the amount of exercising they can do due to problems such as arthritis, asthma or high blood pressure.

Possible Solution:

  • All workouts can be modified to fit your individuals needs and limitations. There are even exercises you can do sitting down.
  • 9 times out of 10, weight loss and exercise improves physical health conditions. You should always ask your MD before starting a new workout regimen.

Barrier #9 Weather

Problem: Its too cold to workout outside or the weather’s too bad to travel to a gym.

Possible Solution:

  • Always have workouts that you can do at home. Even if you don’t have any videos or don’t know of any routines, you can walk the stairs, do jumping jacks, push ups, situps…..etc
